What is toxicity?

Online toxicity refers to harmful, abusive, or disruptive behavior expressed through digital communication platforms such as comment sections, social media, and forums (in this case Twitter X and Truth Social). It includes insults, hate speech, harassment, threats, misinformation, and deliberately provocative language intended to demean individuals or groups or to derail constructive discussion.

Why does it matter?

Toxicity causes real harm. It can damage mental well-being, silence voices through harassment, and discourage people from participating in public discussions. At a societal level, it degrades the quality of debate, spreads polarization and misinformation, and undermines trust in journalism, science, and democratic processes.

Why and how do we report it?

We report online toxicity of important and influencal political persons to increase transparency and accountability around harmful digital discourse. By making toxicity visible and measurable, we aim to raise public awareness, support evidence-based discussion, and ultimately help reduce its impact on individuals and public debate.

To do this, we collect public posts from Twitter X and Truth Social and analyze them using Perspective API, an automated system that estimates the likelihood that a comment contains toxic language. Scores are generated from 0 (not toxic/harmful) to 1 (very toxic/harmful). This approach allows us to monitor large volumes of content consistently and report trends in a clear, data-driven way.
